The Secretary of State for Defence today announced the excellent news that the very popular Forces Help To Buy scheme will be extended into 2018. As you will be aware, the scheme which was launched in 2014, allows serving military personnel to borrow up to half their salary up to a cap of £25,000, interest free over ten years so they can buy their first home, extend a current one or move up the property ladder.

The news is featured on the Armed Forces Covenant website and includes comments from L/Cpl Baffour Asante whose family has benefitted from the scheme.

HM Forces Bovis Homes Offer

At Bovis Homes we understand the unique time pressures that those serving in the armed forces face.

The Armed Forces All Inclusive Discount Scheme has been designed not only to minimise the potential financial outlay of buying a new home, but some of the hassle and hidden costs that go along with it.
This exclusive package includes:

• A price discount of £500 for every £25,000 you spend on a Bovis Home. This equates to 2% of the list price.

• All curtains, carpets and flooring included. This means you won’t need to worry about measuring up, just bring your furniture!

• Bovis Homes will also contribute £500 towards your legal costs (when you use one of our referred independent solicitors).

• As well as all of this, with the Bovis Homes specification you get built-in kitchen appliances (from Hotpoint and Indesit) included in the price as standard. So that’s the hob, oven, fridge freezer, washing machine* and dishwasher* sorted too.

Armed Forces Covenant - Mears Group

Mears Group sign the Armed Forces Corporate Covernant.  Please click HERE to view.

Mears Shropshire Home Services is the Home Improvement Agency serving the county of Shropshire. We deliver a range of services designed to promote and maintain independent living for the older, vulnerable and disabled people of Shropshire. Whether this be aids and adaptations through the Disability Facilities Grant process or through the Handyperson Service offering a range skills such as carpentry, plumbing and general small building repairs – we enable people to remain living in their own homes and environment, independently, safely and securely for as long as they can.

Mears is an organisation that challenges its local branches to get involved in local communities, offering social value in many different ways.

The Shropshire Branch would like to offer and support members of the armed forces and their families, especially those leaving the services and venturing into “civvy street” the opportunity of work placements to shadow our Small Repairs Technicians in the field to learn new basic skills or office based staff to learn the various business roles that are fundamental to the day to day operation of any organisation.

In addition to this the General manager, John Simcox,  would be willing to assist with CV writing, mock interviews and advice on how to approach vacancies and job applications to assist transitioning or former Military personnel finding gainful employment.
Should any current or former Armed Forces personnel wish to take up this offer, please contact John Simcox at or call 01743 458332

Planesaver Credit Union

How we helped a fellow serviceman save £254 on monthly loan repayments.

Military personnel sometimes have limited access to financial services and particularly affordable credit, leaving them a potential target for high cost credit providers such as payday lenders and loan sharks.

We were recently approached by a serviceman who found himself in a spiral of debt, with a series of high interest Credit Card and Payday loans, with monthly repayments over £555 at an average interest rate of 244% APR.

We were able to lend to the individual responsibly, consolidating his existing debt into one manageable repayment straight from his pay.

We paid off all his existing borrowing, leaving the member with a new monthly repayment of £301 at a more favourable interest rate, meaning he could get back on track with his finances.

The serviceman said "Plane Saver guided me into making better financial decisions, this has made me more aware of how expensive some loans can be. Seeking help from the credit union helped me nearly halve my outgoings on debt. Thank you Plane Saver".

Applying for Civil Service Job Vacancies

The Civil Service helps the Government of the day to develop and deliver its policies as effectively as possible.
It incorporates three types of organisations – departments, agencies, and non-departmental government bodies (NDPBs) that work in a wide range of areas, touching on everyone’s day-to-day lives, such as education, health and policing.
Because our organisations deal with so many different aspects of government, civil servants work in an enormous variety of roles.
Becoming a civil servant could be as simple as applying for one of the many jobs advertised on our jobs website.  We also offer a variety of fast track routes for promising graduates and experienced professionals.

Our professional entry routes encourage people with skills developed in the private sector to transfer into the Civil Service at the right level. You can then apply those skills to make a real difference to our everyday lives. There are 22 different professions covered, and a number of different ways to apply.
