Keeping families safe on social media

It's always a good idea to keep yourself safe on social media so here's some good help and advice to make sure your privacy settings are set correctly.

Perhaps a quick safety check idea for all the family, after dinner.
You can never be too careful:

Social networking sites are great for keeping in touch with family and friends, and letting the world know what you’re up to. The ‘Online engagement guidelines’ make it clear that we encourage the safe and responsible use of social networking sites.

This page contains guidance on how to stay safe and to think about what you post online. Remember, that there may be those who use such sites for unsavoury reasons.

Be extra careful if you have identified yourself as being a member of the military or an MOD civilian.

Joining Forces - Savings & Loans for the Armed Forces

Joining forces – Savings and loan repayments taken straight from pay. The MoD has made possible for three of the UK’s leading credit unions to join forces and make simple saving accounts and loans available to the armed forces and their families.

Forces families whose credit ratings are damaged by the demands of the job are to be offered cheap loans and good savings accounts. A new government –backed credit union service will help Army, Navy and RAF personnel struggling to build a credit rating.

Overseas postings and call-ups at short notice often make it impossible to show evidence of regular payment – deterring lenders from offering cheap deals. Now a trio of credit unions will allow personnel and their families to repay loans from them through their pay packets and offer the chance to save regularly.

Healthy Shropshire News: An Update on E-cigarettes

An update on E-cigarettes

News from our partners at Help2Change
Electronic cigarettes, also known as e-cigs or vapourisers, are often made to look or feel like real cigarettes. Most (although not all) electronic cigarettes contain nicotine (but don't contain tobacco) and as nothing is burning they don't produce smoke.
Whilst e-cigarettes do not produce smoke, users exhale a smoke-like vapour consisting largely of propylene glycol and glycerine. There is little evidence of harmful effects in the short to medium term from repeated exposure to these chemicals, and an absence of evidence of significant harm to bystanders caused by e-cigarettes.

SFA & SSFA Occupants: Have you got home liability insurance cover?

If you occupy Service Family Accommodation be it either SFA or SSFA you will have signed an agreement when you moved into the property called a Service Licence to Occupy Service Family Accommodation (known as a Licence to Occupy). Due to this, you are not classed as a tenant you are a licensee.

Within the Licence to Occupy there is a clause that states that you are liable for damage up to at least the sum advised currently by the MOD, which from 1st August 2011 is set at £20,000.

You need to arrange your own home liability insurance cover – of at least £20,000. The Services Insurance and Investment Advisory Panel (SIIAP) at provides details of insurance providers who can ensure that you have the necessary ‘Licence to Occupy’ SFA cover.

Because you occupy the property under this agreement and are not classed as a tenant, standard home insurance policies do not cover your liability. SIIAP members offer policies that have a Licence to Occupy extension that has been specifically designed to meet this risk.

See CarillionAmey guide Your Guide to Living in Service Family Accommodation page 10.

Home-Start Telford & Wrekin - Support & Friendship for Families

Home-Start Telford & Wrekin is a voluntary organisation which offers a helping hand to parents of young children at just such times. They can provide support and a listening ear to families who are finding it difficult to cope, whether through isolation, ill health, domestic abuse, practical issues or simply low self-esteem.

The years between birth and school are among the most important in a child's development. Research has shown that children raised in a stable, loving environment have much better life chances later on. Home-Start's aim is to help support parents in those early years as they build better lives for their children.

Home-Start works because its volunteers have been parents themselves. They know what it's like when life's stresses get in the way, and how hard it can be to stay on track and provide the love, routine and stimulation so vital to a young child's future. They work alongside parents to provide non- judgemental support and encouragement for as long as is needed, until strength and confidence are restored.

Trained volunteers are carefully matched to families and will visit or make contact every week until the last child turns five, or parents feel able to cope on their own.

Home-Start is committed to making a real, positive difference to outcomes for families and their children, and all the evidence shows that parents who have used the scheme have a hugely improved quality of life and ability to cope once they're 'flying solo' again.

If you would like to find out more about being a Home-Start volunteer or becoming a Trustee, contact the office by phoning  01952 872280 or click HERE

SSAFA Support for Homeless Armed Forces Veterans

There's no question that life after the Forces can be challenging. At SSAFA we know that significant number of veterans find themselves on the streets so we have developed specialist services to support them.

For some service life can put a strain on relationships leading to divorce. A lack of experience in dealing with every day finances can quickly get people into trouble too. Mental health problems, sometimes relating to military service such as PTSD, can also increase the risk of homelessness with sufferers facing addiction and unemployment.

Getting veterans back on their feet

As a priority our team provide food, clothing and shelter for veterans who find themselves homeless. We then look to see what other support we can provide to get someone off the street.

Importantly, our network of volunteers outside of London, as well as our wider welfare services mean that SSAFA is there for our veterans as they rebuild their lives. For someone moving into a new home or kicking an addiction, our support and funding is an essential part of their journey.

Call our Housing Advisors on 020 7463 9398 or send us an online enquiry.
